While traditional fireplaces create a comforting ambiance on all living areas on cold winter days, much of that heat gets lost through the chimney leaving you with just the illusion of warmth.
Fortunately, there is a way to keep your living area heated for longer. Check out these 5 tips to keep your living area heated for longer:
Sometimes we tend to leave the damper just a little bit open with the idea of leaving just enough space for toxic gases to escape, but not open enough to keep the heat from escaping; doing this is not only hazardous to your health, but it will not keep your living area heated, as fire needs oxygen to burn.
Open your damper completely to increase the amount of air flowing through your chimney. This will make the wood burn faster, improve combustion and produce more heat.
Green wood burns inefficiently. Choosing to burn freshly cut wood will only produce large amounts of smoke, but will fail in producing the heat you want for your living area. The best choice to produce heat is to burn seasoned firewood that has been cut and confined in a dry place for at least a year or a season.
Firescreens are a great option if you want to add safety and style to your fireplace, but they are not the best option if what you’re looking for is to keep a room heated for long periods of time. A better alternative to achieve this goal is a fireplace door. Keeping the doors from your fireplace door closed while the fire burns, will keep most of the heat in and will increase the temperature of your chimney.
To improve is use, make sure your fireplace door is installed properly. The doors should fit tightly enough on your fireplace door opening and the edges should be sealed.
